About W.E. Hutton

The wreck of the WE Hutton is large and very difficult to navigate. Although it is contiguous it is so spread out that you can get very confused in low visibility. A cluster of damaged boilers provide the only relief to the low, flat features of the rest of the wreck. There is a theory that says that this wreck might not actually be the wreck of the Hutton as there were two other ships - the Papoose and the Ario - which were of a similar age and size. One piece of evidence which might support this theory is that there appear to be three masts at the site of the wreck, while the Hutton only had two. The Papoose also had two masts but the Ario had three. Another possible piece of evidence is that an artifact with the 'Socony' name and emblem on it was recovered at the site. The Ario belonged to Socony, while the Hutton was owned by the Pure Oil Company.
