About Republic Wreck

The Republic was built in 1920 by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp of Delaware. She was well known as the Liberty Minquas or Weweantic. In 1923 she was sold and renamed the Republic. In February 1942, the Republic was enroute to Houston when two torpedos from a nearby German U 504 Submarine struck her on her port side. The explosions ripped holes in her hull and damaged her engines. Several crew members died and their bodies was recovered after washing ashore. The rest of the survivors rowed ashore in a lifeboat. After the attack, she drifted off and grounded close to Hobe sound before she finally sank. The same German Submarine that sank the Republic, sank in 1943 on the Spanish Coast.
