About Kahuna Canyon

This site is near Mokule'ia, five miles west of Haleiwa Harbor. The site is characterized by an enormous bowl-shaped crater which starts at 90 feet and reaches its top at 35 feet. The seaward half of the crater is missing which makes the site easy to explore. On the eastern side the crater becomes a chasm and large walls rise from the sea bottom, creating an underwater Grand Canyon which extends 200 yards towards the shore. These walls are peppered with caves and large pukas and huge unicorn surgeonfish, parrotfish and ulua are common. After the winter storms this site is overrun with shells such as augers, mitres, and cowries. Visibility is good at this site.
