The wreck of the Cassimir is sometimes known by the name of the buoy which marks the site at the surface, the WR-2. It used to be one of the prettiest wrecks of North Carolina but storms in the last few years have knocked down the stern (which leans on its port side) quite a bit, although it does still rise above the surface. The steering mechanism is no longer hidden inside the stern but is now entirely exposed. The wreck lies on its keel and is contiguous to the bow. There is a small area of sand and low debris between the bow and the rest of the wreck. The bow seems to have been damaged by the storm and it currently sits at about 2 o' clock to the keel. An anchor sits in the sand behind the bow and the windlass sits in the sand at the base of the bow. The greatest relief on this wreck is provided by the bow and the stern which are both reasonably intact. The middle section of the ship lies open. The whole site is quite small and is easy to navigate when visibility is good (although it can be harder in low visibility). The wreck can be explored in one dive.
