About Avalanche Reef

Part of a large reef, AVALANCHE REEF features a colourful gorge and this 'avalanche' of colour give this reef its name. It's rocky bottom is 26m and for advanced divers. Locals love this old favorite and it's part of a range of reefs on Nelson Mandela Bay's 'wild side' ie not in the Bay. It has a carpeted gorge which runs up to a minimum depth of 17m which provides shelter for an interesting selection of fish and harmless pajama sharks. The walls of the gorge are fully clad with fine examples and uncountable varieties of hard and soft corals. Large ferns add to the ambience of the reef which has gained a local status as 'Old Faithful' for always delivering an exhilirating dive. A resident horsefish, eels and the odd ragged tooth shark never disappoint even its most regular visitors.
