About Akitsushima

The Akitsushima was a 118 meter long Japanese vessel which served as a sea plane tender. She sunk on 24 September 1944 after being attacked by an air raid, she went down within a matter of minutes. She now lies in some fairly good condition despite the way she went out, remaining intact in many areas. The wreck is quite easy to penetrate and can most easily be done via the keel, though one must note that dive centers in the area typically require a wreck diving qualification to dive the Akitsushima due to the amount of protruding pieces of metal inside as well as the depth involved. Though for those of you whom have these qualifications, you are in for a great dive- access to the engine room is also possible. For those without wreck diving qualifications you can still enjoy this dive from the outside, as it hosts numerous fish and some interesting coral growth too.
