About Helmet Wreck

The Helmet or Depth charge Wreck. (X Wreck) Depth: Bow -110 feet (30m) Stern - 45 feet (14m) It is a newer addition to Palau's' wreck discoveries and still bears a lot of artifacts. The name it bears for the while is derived from the helmet and depth charge cargo it carries. Another victim of Operation Desecrate, the vessel was shot down and sunk through a series of explosions. One of Palau's smaller wrecks this one is still 'nameless' and relatively 'origin-less' and does not appear to be Japanese made. The ship is 189 feet long and its weight has not yet been estimated. The wreck carries radial engines for Zero planes, lanterns, plenty of rifles and ammunition (All live, unstable and very dangerous), medicine bottles and gas masks. The helmet cargo is completely compounded from being submerged for so long. It slopes gently, having landed on the base of a hill and is positioned in such a way that it can be dived both deep and shallow. The explosion that tore open the hull left a gaping hole in the starboard leaving depth charges lying all over. An inner passageway in the middle of the deck leads to a catwalk suspended over the engine room and small rooms, this is just one are of what penetration has to offer. Intermediate, with a wreck qualification is required for this dive. Visibility is best during incoming tide. Location: Malakal Harbor, west of Koror. Marine life: Corals include Stag Horn, Brain and Lettuce. The usual Palauan tropical fish don't disappoint here either.
