About Whale Cave

Whale Cave, also known as Ghar in-Niexef or Audrey’s Crack, is a unique crack cave located in Dwejra on the west side of Gozo. The cave is situated approximately 90-100 m from the seaward exit of Inland Sea’s Tunnel, following the reef wall in a northerly direction. The entrance to the cave is found at a depth of 25 m and is about 15 m wide. The cave extends about 80 m inwards and gradually becomes shallower towards the end. Divers should be aware of potential rough seas, swell, currents, and small tourist boats touring the cave.

The seabed around the cave slopes to depths exceeding 40 m, offering an interesting underwater landscape. On the right side of the cave, there is a large rock that divers can swim underneath, while on the left side, there is a narrow gap that divers can follow for up to 5 m. The cave is not an overhead environment as the crack is open to the surface all the way. Approximately 100 metres north from Whale Cave is another cave known as Tal-Barba or 200m Tunnel. Due to the depth and potential currents, this dive site is recommended for advanced divers. The dive site type is categorized as a Cave and Wall.
