About Schnellboot S-31

The Schnellboot S-31 is a World War II wreck located near the Grand Harbour of Valletta, Malta. This German fast motor torpedo boat sank on 10th May 1942 after colliding with a loose mine, resulting in the loss of 13 crew members. The wreck, which is considered a war grave, lies at a depth of approximately 65 meters in an upright position on the sandy/silty seabed. The boat, originally made of an aluminum frame covered with mahogany planking, now only has its metal frame remaining as the wooden casing has rotted away. The hull is broken in two, but the boat is otherwise intact, with its original weaponry, including three engines, triple propellers, rudders, twin torpedo-tubes with torpedoes, and anti-aircraft machine guns, still present for divers to explore.

The Schnellboot S-31 wreck was discovered in September 2000 by a team of technical divers. As of 1st May 2019, the site is managed by Heritage Malta and requires a special permit for diving. The wreck, which is approximately 33 meters long and 5 meters in beam, is recommended for technical divers due to its depth. The dive site offers a unique opportunity to explore a piece of World War II history.
