Between May and August Whyalla becomes a cuttlefish breeding ground Giant Australian Cuttlefish (Sepia apama) which can grow up to 60cm in length and weigh up to 5kg migrate here. Fascinatingly enough their male species only reproduce once and the females die shortly after the eggs hatch.
