About Lady Bowen

Originally built by the Queensland Steam Navigation Company in 1864 a paddle steamer with sails, this vessel was originally 210.5ft in length,. When the Australian Steam Navigation company took ownership of her she was lengthened to 228ft. She underwent another overhaul in 1889 becoming a four Amsted schooner, loosing the steam machines and paddles. In 1894 she hit a reef two hours form Cairns and was discovered in 1996 lying in 34m of water. After one hundred years of rotting most of the timber has worn away but thee steel hull is still intact and the marine life is abundant even hammerheads!
