About Inscription Point

Lieutenant James Cook landed here during his travels and named the spot Stingray Harbour. Little did he and his entourage know, but this was where one could find the weedy sea dragon. A specially camouflaged little sea horse. The dive is located in Botany Bay National park at Kurnell. It can be accessed via Captain Cook drive and the park charges an entrance fee. The road winds down to Cape Solander, past the visitors centre and to Sutherland Point. One and a half km into the park there's a parking area next to the road. There's a stairway that leads down the cliff face off the lot hence the site's other name; The Steps. It has also been referred to as 'The Monuments' in the past. The path leads to a boardwalk where you can enter from the rock platform. A 20m surface swim to Bare Island will place you at your decent point where there are boulders. The site extents for 13m to the sand after which there is a left turn to follow along the seaweed where there are plenty of Weedy Sea Dragons in a gorgeous sponge garden with plenty of other marine creatures. Visibility can be a bit moody due to currents.
